  • Angoalissar Brings Water to 4,000 People in Namibe, Angola

    Nov 2018

Angoalissar invested US$600,000 as part of its social responsibility program for the construction of a center to collect, treat and distribute drinking water in the commune of Lucira, located 200 kilometers from the provincial capital, which was handed over to the community on November 19 in the presence of the deputy provincial governor, José Tchindongo António.

This project, in line with Webcor´s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 6 on access to clean water and sanitation, will have a significant impact on the lives of the villagers and in particular its women and girls. Since walking to fetch water is physically demanding and a responsibility that almost always falls to females, many girls are unable to attend school to comply with their primary duty for the family, collecting water, which requires hours of walking each day. Moreover, the paths are roads that expose girls and women to danger.

"Here is when we realize that water scarcity is not only about climate change; it is also about gender equality, peace, and prosperity, and the ability of these people to evolve and move forward," highlights Hiba Nesr, Director of Social Responsibility of the Group.

Eduardo Barbosa, financial director of Angoalissar, said that the company was identifying other needs of the population in order to establish public-private partnerships to help the Namibe authorities.
